Case Study: Yates Street Penthouse: A Fluid Expression of Form and Feeling

BACKGROUND

Penthouse Refreshed: Transitioning a Dated Retreat Into a Sleek, Modern Escape

In the heart of Victoria, British Columbia, Pamela Billinghurst Interior Design transformed a penthouse on Yates Street, one of Victoria’s most historically significant streets. The penthouse, which boasts picturesque views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Peninsula, was transformed from a dated space into a contemporary sanctuary of calm and purpose.

Challenges: A Commitment to Purposeful Minimalism

"Our client desired a space that felt peaceful and calm with a simple yet impactful material palette," explains Pamela Billinghurst, whose team approached the project with a commitment to purposeful minimalism. This vision required meticulous attention to detail."

CHALLENGES

Balancing Warmth Within Minimalism

Achieving a sense of calm without sacrificing warmth presented a nuanced design challenge. What began as a stark, white interior risked feeling sterile and one-dimensional if not thoughtfully layered. The goal was to soften the minimalism by introducing depth, materiality, and tonal variation while preserving the clarity and restraint that defined the overall vision.

Each transition had to feel effortless. Whites carry through the space, gradually yielding to deeper accents. Wood connects rather than competes, while darker elements ground the space with precision. Equally critical was the selection and placement of fixtures and finishes, where every detail needed to balance quiet integration with intentional presence. This extended beyond aesthetics into a considered evolution, where alignment, proportion, and spatial continuity quietly uphold the integrity of the design.

SOLUTIONS

Simplicity Meets Sophistication

Using materials like white oak flooring, large windows for maximum light, and a warm, white color palette created an almost monastic-like atmosphere in the penthouse. Thoughtful and sophisticated design choices helped achieve this seamless aesthetic, but the project wasn't without its challenges. One of the most critical challenges was merging the guest bath and powder bath to create a more significant, spacious bath. Billinghurst also removed the door between the primary bedroom and ensuite to create an uninterrupted primary space and a white oak partition that elegantly defines the boundaries of the primary and walk-in closet.

One of the most critical aspects was ensuring perfect alignment between plumbing fixtures and surrounding finishes - a detail that can make or break the clean lines essential to minimalist design. When choosing fixtures, Billingshurst recommended VOLA products.

In the kitchen, where functionality meets daily life, the VOLA 590H faucet is both a practical necessity and an architectural statement. Its matte black finish harmoniously complements the stone island, while its rounded form provides a gentle contrast to the space's linear elements. The fixture transforms everyday tasks into elevated experiences, proving that utility and beauty coexist perfectly.

RESULTS

Carefully curated with VOLA

Through the thoughtful selection of VOLA products and meticulous attention to detail, Pamela Billinghurst Interior Design successfully created a space that transcends mere functionality to become a haven of sophisticated simplicity. The project is a testament to how carefully chosen fixtures can contribute to a space's overall sense of peace and purpose.

THE FUTURE

Vola’s Timeless Legacy

The client's response to the VOLA fixtures also speaks volumes about their impact. According to Billinghurst, the client said of VOLA: "The simple beauty of them is that they feel solid and have mass when turned on, yet they move so smoothly. They look timeless and feel like they will last."

We selected VOLA for this project because the deceptively simple detailing of VOLA fixtures is in perfect alignment with our design philosophy and vision for this space. VOLA exudes quality, timelessness, and a commitment to sustainability,”
